English version
Hi Friends, Thanks for subscribing to my newsletter. This is the first one. It’s a collection of articles and videos I found interesting. In each month, there will be two versions, English and Chinese. The articles and videos might be slightly different depending on the availabilities.
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/27/science/study-happy-save-money-time.html A recent study found that compared to spending money buying material goods, spending money on buying time, such as ordering food, hiring a maid, makes people happier. In the past decade, researchers have been wondering how to use money to buy happiness. They found two ways: first, using money on others (vs. on self); second, on experiential purchase (vs. material purchase). Now they found the third way, using money to buy time. Make sense. 2. What I learned from 100 days of rejection? https://www.ted.com/talks/jia_jiang_what_i_learned_from_100_days_of_rejection/transcript?language=en A great TED talk. Jia Jiang talked about his experience of conducting a social experiment on rejection. He went out and asked favors from strangers everyday in 100 days. The experiences surprised him a lot. It has made him feel more comfortable about rejections. This is a great skill to have. How many things haven’t you done because you are afraid of rejections? 3. How friendships change in adulthood? https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2015/10/how-friendships-change-over-time-in-adulthood/411466/ As we grow older, the meaning of friendship changes. When we were in college, we spent most of our free time hanging out with friends. However, when we grow older, friendship goes down towards the end of the relationship hierarchy. Romantic partners, children, parents, all these come first. Friendship is no longer about companionship. Sometimes, it is just the feeling that we know they are there. The good news is, when kids go to college, friendship will return. Articles that are only available in English 4. New nutrition study changes nothing https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2017/09/moderate-intake-of-things-linked-to-health/538428/?utm_source=atlfb The new nutrition study based on the PURE project has drawn great attention. Instead of talking about the specific result, the article talks about the psychology of publishing. Why the findings on health related topics are often seemed contradictory? The article takes a unique perspective on how reporters write. 5. Unless you are Oprah, be yourself is terrible advice https://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/05/opinion/sunday/unless-youre-oprah-be-yourself-is-terrible-advice.html People often say, just be yourself, as if it can solve every problem. This article thinks authenticity might be overrated. For example, authenticity makes people challenge themselves less. If you have any thoughts and comments, send me an email,[email protected]. See you next month!
